On Tuesday, April 21, San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) awarded $95,000 in scholarships to 124 students during its Open House Scholarship and Awards Celebration, held from 4–6 p.m. at North City Campus (8355 Aero Dr.). Hosted by the Office of Student Affairs and the SDCCE Foundation, the annual event provides adult learners with critical financial support to transition into career and college.
This year, $95,000 in scholarships and awards were distributed, with each of the 124 recipients receiving at least $500. Recognized nationally as a leader in free workforce training for adult learners, immigrants, and refugees, SDCCE helps students returning to school advance or pivot their careers. From a highly competitive pool of 321 applicants, recipients were selected for their academic achievement, personal growth, and community service.
Notably, two students each received $10,000 scholarships, reflecting a significant investment in their educational and career pathways. All scholarships and awards are made possible through the SDCCE Foundation, with generous support from donors, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners.
“Although this is a one-day event, the impact of education and scholarship support lasts a lifetime,” said Dr. Tina M. King, SDCCE President. “Many of our students are stepping onto a college campus for the first time or returning for a career change or second chance, and thanks to the generosity of our donors, they gain access to opportunities that transform their futures and strengthen their communities.”
Among the scholarship recipients is Marisela Ramirez, a high school diploma/equivalency student whose determination reflects the spirit of this year’s awards. She shared, “I want to thank my daughter for helping me get into this college. I want to also thank my teachers, Doria and Elissa. If it hadn't been for them I would not be receiving this scholarship.” Martinez plans to continue her education to earn an associates degree.
Dabens Duronne, 19, an Administrative Assistant student, received the Price Family Foundation SDCCE Cares Scholarship. “As an immigrant student from Haiti, my journey has not always been easy, but education has given me a new direction and purpose,” he said. “Receiving this scholarship motivates me to keep pushing forward and striving for success. I hope my story inspires others to stay focused on their goals, no matter where they come from.”
Duronne began at SDCCE in fall 2024 with the goal of transitioning to City College. Now dually enrolled, he is nearing completion of an associate degree in Information Systems at City College and plans to transfer to a university to continue building a career in technology and business.
Students will also benefit from the San Diego Promise Scholarship, which provides up to two years of tuition at City College, Mesa College, and Miramar College.
