RSVPs have officially closed and we were able to expand seating to accommodate up to 400 attendees! Doors open at 7:30 a.m., with the program beginning promptly at 9:00 a.m. An RSVP is required to receive complimentary parking validation at check-in and exclusive, limited-edition Convocation swag. Faculty Spotlight

This week's Faculty Spotlight shines on our CalWORKs Department Chair, Juan Serrano! With more than 25 years at the college, Juan brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to supporting students, colleagues, and the community.

Before stepping into his current role, Juan spent more than 20 years working in County Juvenile Detention Facilities, overseeing psychoeducational counseling services, managing case management systems serving more than 5,000 youth, and coordinating health, life skills, crisis intervention, and coping support services.

Today, Juan leads and supports the CalWORKs counseling team while collaborating on initiatives that strengthen programs and enhance student services. He also recently completed his two-year term as the CalWORKs Region 10 Representative, advocating for the college and the 10 community colleges throughout the region.

Outside of work, Juan enjoys camping, beach days, mountain biking, traveling, off-roading, and a trip to the mall when the opportunity arises. Most of all, he values time with family and friends and staying connected to the people and experiences that matter most.

Manager Spotlight

Our Manager Spotlight shines on our Director of Administrative Services, Mark Nesbit II! Mark has been part of SDCCE for nine years, bringing a background in public accounting and District Office finance to his work supporting the college.

Mark began his career in public accounting before transitioning to the District Office as an Accounting Specialist. Since joining SDCCE in 2017, he has served as an Accounting Supervisor and now as Director of Administrative Services.

What Mark values most about his role is the opportunity to serve SDCCE students and see how education can help people better their lives. He finds fulfillment in contributing to a college that makes a meaningful difference in the community.

Outside of work, Mark enjoys working out, helping coach his children in sports, and embracing his love of "nerd culture," including Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Marvel/DC. He is also a dedicated 49ers fan.

  • I was honored to co-present at the Wheelhouse Advancing Leaders Institute (ALI/CEO Institute) alongside President Carla Tweed, Ed.D. ALI brings together talented leaders from across the California Community Colleges who are preparing and aspiring to serve as future CEOs. It was an honor to contribute to a space focused on leadership, growth, reflection, and the responsibility we have to lead our institutions with courage, authenticity, and a deep commitment to student success.
  • Last week, the Executive President's Cabinet and President's Cabinet Retreat provided an opportunity to reflect on our progress, discuss our goals and priorities, and identify opportunities to strengthen our collective work. These conversations are important as we continue to align our efforts, support our students and employees, and advance the work of San Diego College of Continuing Education.

The Research Corner

This week, we invite you to read a study "How American Adults Obtain Work Skills: Results of a New National Survey" which found reduced access to formal and informal employer training for low education employees and evidence of racial and ethnic disparities. The article may be found on the following link: https://par.nsf.gov/servlets/purl/10393055. Please take a minute to review this resource and email [email protected] if you have any questions.
